It is more reliable than wiping, which can be skipped, interrupted, or fail on a dead device. A retired drive or device is a breach waiting to happen. Wiping and disposal both leave room for error: a wipe can be skipped or left incomplete, and a failed drive often cannot be wiped at all yet still holds readable data. Physical destruction removes that risk. Once it is destroyed, there is nothing left to recover.

What is hard drive destruction?
Hard drive destruction is the physical destruction of a storage drive so its data is permanently unrecoverable. Unlike deleting files or reformatting, which leave data intact and readable with free tools, destruction removes the drive itself as an object that can be read.
It applies to spinning hard disks (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs), server drives, and the drives inside laptops, copiers, and networking gear. The U.S. standard NIST SP 800-88 defines this level as "destroy," the highest of its three media-sanitization levels (clear, purge, destroy), reserved for media leaving your control.
Isn't wiping or degaussing enough?
Not reliably. Wiping (software overwriting) works only if it runs to completion on a healthy drive, and a failed or non-spinning drive often cannot be wiped at all while still holding readable data. Degaussing erases magnetic HDDs with a strong magnetic field, but it does nothing to SSDs, which store data on flash chips, not magnetic platters.
Physical destruction is the one method that works the same way on every drive type: no drive, no data. For a drive that never leaves a live, secured system you may not need it; for any drive being retired, disposed of, or sent off site, destruction is the defensible choice.
Does shredding work on SSDs?
Yes, but SSDs need a smaller shred size than hard disks. Because an SSD stores data on flash memory chips, a fragment of an intact chip can still hold data, so SSDs are shredded to a finer particle size than magnetic HDDs.
We separate the SSD and HDD streams and destroy each to an appropriate size, then document both on the same certificate.
Do you destroy whole devices and media, not just loose drives?
Yes. As well as loose hard drives and SSDs, we destroy the devices and media that carry data, laptops, desktops, phones, servers, backup tapes, USB and flash drives, and optical discs, so nothing readable survives whatever form it is in.
Prototypes and pre-release hardware are handled the same way, where the design matters as much as the data. It all runs through one documented, certified process, so a full IT decommission is a single job rather than several.
How does the process work, on site or off site?
Two options, same certified outcome. On site, our mobile unit destroys drives at your premises while you watch, so nothing leaves intact. Off site, drives are collected in secure containers under a documented chain of custody and destroyed at our facility.
Either way, each drive is scanned and itemized, and the job closes with a certificate of destruction.
How do I get proof it was destroyed?
Every job ends with a certificate of destruction that records what was destroyed, when, how, and by whom, with serial-level itemization available so each drive is accounted for individually.
Chain-of-custody documentation is available on request. That paperwork is what auditors ask for under rules like HIPAA and the FACTA Disposal Rule.
What does hard drive destruction cost?
It is priced per job, based on the number of drives, whether you need on-site (mobile) or off-site destruction, and pickup location, rather than a flat per-drive rate published online. A single retired laptop and a data-center decommission are very different jobs.
