How Long to Keep Records Before Shredding

Compliance5 min readUpdated June 2026

Keeping a document too long is its own risk. Once it is past its required retention period it is no longer an asset, it is a liability waiting to be breached.

Retention comes first

Most records have a defined life set by law, regulation, or your own policy. Tax, medical, financial, and HR files each carry their own schedules, so the first step is knowing which rule applies to which file.

Then destroy on schedule

When a record reaches the end of its retention period, the safe move is secure destruction, not the recycling bin. A retention schedule tells you when that point arrives.

How Shreddee helps

We destroy end-of-retention files securely and certify each job, so disposal is documented as carefully as retention. See paper shredding.
