Hard Drive Destruction vs. Wiping

Hard drives6 min readUpdated June 2026

When an old drive holds data you cannot let out, the question is whether wiping is enough or whether the drive has to be destroyed.

What wiping actually does

Wiping overwrites a drive so the data can no longer be read normally. Done properly on a healthy drive it can work, but it depends on the drive functioning, does not always work on modern SSDs, and is easy to skip or do incompletely.

What destruction does differently

Physical destruction removes the question entirely. Once the drive is destroyed there is nothing left to recover from, and you have a certificate of destruction as proof.

How Shreddee handles it

We destroy the drives and document each one. See our hard drive destruction service.
